Minimum Requirements:

  • NQF 9: M-Tech or MSc with microbiology, molecular biology or virology.
  • Four years analytical laboratory and research focusing on microbiology, molecular biology or virology in a ISO 17025 accredited laboratory.
  • Evidence of having published research findings in a scientific journal with at least one publication as a first author.
  • Evidence of presentation of scientific publications and/ reports.
  • Professional registration e.g SACNASP.
  • Code 08 driver’s licence.

Primary Duties:

  • Perform and troubleshoot a range of microbiology, molecular biology and virology laboratory experiments.
  • Contribute to the development of microbiology and molecular biology methods.
  • Draft standard operating procedure (SOPs) for the execution of microbiology and molecular methods as well as the preparation of reagents.
  • Conduct exercises to validate methods according to ISO 17025 requirements.
  • Train routine staff on the execution of microbiology and molecular biology methods in accordance with SOPs.
  • Undertake scientific investigation on waterborne microorganisms and analyze complex and often ambiguous results with a view to understanding their significance to human health.
  • Report results and findings in oral and written formats for a variety of audiences including: technical staff, managers and customers.
  • Assist with the general maintenance of equipment related to microbiology and molecular methods according ISO 17025 requirements.
  • Contribute to the organization of the laboratory to achieve compliance with ISO 17025 and relevant safety requirements

Knowledge:

  • Sound knowledge of microbiology, molecular and virology testing techniques
  • Working knowledge of statistics.
  • Sound knowledge of microbial indicator organisms
  • Basic knowledge of SANS 241 and other water quality guidelines.

Skills:

  • Skilled in the interpretation of scientific data and communication of findings to different audiences.
  • Compiling of scientific publications, reports and presentations.

Attitude:

  • Self-motivated, quality and output driven person who can handle pressure and routine work.
  • Ability to interact with staff and customers.
