Job Description:

  • The Chief Safety Officer is responsible for the Safety management of Venetia Open Pit (VOP) and the optimisation of safety and risk control through design, implementation, evaluation, coordination and management of the safety and risk control systems, as well as ensuring legal compliance in the department.

KEY RESULT AREAS:

  • Develop and manage integrated Safety and Health management systems to ensure achievement of objectives, by establishing and implementing approved medium and long term plans, aligned to the company’s strategic business goals.
  • Provide specialist technical knowledge and advice to all levels of management and resolve a wide range of Safety and Health management system challenges and related interfacing issues, requiring solutions for new projects, unusual conditions and corrective measures.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the Safety and Health management programme, including training and awareness, identify opportunities and threats and formulate plans to enhance the participation of management in achieving the company’s and corporate Safety and Health goals.
  • Revise Safety and Health standards and associated documentation such as procedures and forms on an ongoing basis to ensure compliance to current legislations and ISO 45001 requirements.
  • Ensure adequate knowledge of Safety and Health standards and statutory applicable regulations, by giving effective advice and recommendations to line managers and employees.
  • Compile Safety and Health reports and statistics to meet on mine, off mine statutory requirements.
  • Liaise with external stakeholders with regards to permissions, exemptions and legal liability.
  • Investigate all serious and critical incidents and associated follow up action strategies and implement medium and long term plans to prevent similar incidents from re-occurrence.
  • Develop training modules and coordinate training in Safety and Health Risk Management for the VOP.
  • Develop and support the implementation of safety interventions and programmes across the VOP.
  • Compile Safety Improvement Plans and ensure plans are maintained for the VOP.
  • Coordinate and participate in the 4-layer Operational Risk Management Process of the VOP.
  • Effectively manage people, ensuring that roles are well defined and clarified and that competencies and learning paths are developed to employee capacity and capability.
  • Lead / Participate in Site Safety inspections and manage Safety officers.
  • Advise all Safety employees and line management on ways of improving the effectiveness of Safety transactional systems at operations.
  • Advise line on safety management system requirements.
  • Coach operating management on the safety benefits of establishing an aligned organisation and the removal of drivers for unsafe practices and behaviours.
  • Coach Safety reps/line operators and line leadership to build technical, managerial, and leadership skills and competencies.
  • Coach workplace safety representatives on the execution of their duties and responsibilities, in accordance with provisions.
  • Conduct in-the-field safety coaching.
  • Provide input on risk assessment and audit processes; report and advise on review findings and make recommendations.
  • Coach on high risk work (HRW) and observed deviations
  • Consult with relevant stakeholders/experts to resolve safety related concerns/issues as reported and raised by employees, visitors or contractors
  • Facilitate the identification of operational risks and prioritise unwanted events and effective control strategies at operations
  • Identify changing hazards/risks on site and make suggestions to adjust standards accordingly
  • Recommend measures to help protect employees from potentially hazardous work, methods, processes or materials
  • Conduct safety walks & selected safety inspections on-site and record findings and observations.
  • Guide safety personnel with regards to handling of contractor safety officers
  • Contribute to building relationships with contractor safety management by providing guidance on safety related matters
