Business Need/Purpose of Role:
A senior melter is responsible for overseeing and supervising all activities involved with melting and casting. They ensure that all safety check points and procedures are adhered to during scrap breaking, scrap charging, melting process, metal trimming, casting process and monitoring of the refractory lining life and relining procedures. They are responsible for ensuring that melting processes conform to quality requirements.
Job Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Matric (Grade 12) or N3 certificate or equivalent
- A technical training record
- Administrative experience
- Valid driver’s license
Minimum Experience:
- 5 years’ experience in the melting environment.
- 3 years’ experience on spectrometer operation
- 3 years’ experience with charge calculations
Key Tasks:
- Oversee and supervise activities in the melting section
- Ensure that melting processes conform to quality requirements
Administer and monitor the following work instructions:
Induction furnace reline
- Melting & pouring
- Emergency shutdown of induction furnaces
- Furnace charging
- Spectrographic analysis
- Ensure that consumable stock items are maintained and report low stock levels to the Shift Leader / Metallurgist
- Stack items in allocated areas and in a safe manner
- Achieve set production targets and complete production records
- Perform TPM checklists
- Always adhere to Company policies and procedures, standard operating procedures and work instructions (SOPs and WI)
- Operate machines / equipment in accordance with safe work instructions
- Identify any potential hazards and risks and report to the Shift Leaders
- To adhere to required protective clothing rules and ensure appropriate PPE is worn at all times
- Attend compulsory safe start / green are meetings at the beginning of every shift
- Adherence to quality control as per work instructions
- Adherence to all statutory EHS, housekeeping and 5S requirements
Adhere to Duty of Care Policy at all times
Minimum Skills/Abilities:
- Computer literate - Basic MS Office Suite
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
