Overall Job Responsibility:
Reporting to the Manager of the Oral Health Department, the Dentist works as part of a multi-disciplinary team to provide ongoing clinical dental care to the community through the dental clinic in accordance with the Oral Health Protocol, (2021) or as current. The Dentist will work to serve our clients in both the Windsor and Leamington offices.

Key areas of Responsibility include but are not limited to:

  • Obtains complete medical history. Verifies and applies medical history prior to treatment by consulting with family members and physicians when necessary. Refers clients for medical testing if warranted.
  • Performs oral examinations, formulates treatment plans, informs clients and families of treatment plans and obtains consent for treatment.
  • Provides a broad range of basic dental treatment, such as dental restorations, extractions, oral hygiene procedures, root canal treatment on selected teeth.
  • Performs emergency dental procedures.
  • Prescribes appropriate medications and administers local anaesthetic.
  • Monitor and perform Infection prevention and control practices (IPAC) to ensure patient safety following IPAC best practices.
  • Operates dental x-ray machines, radiographic processor and interprets radiographs.
  • Ensures proper x-ray quality assurance and safety, and the proper disposal of biohazard and/or environmental waste.
  • Receives referrals from private dental and medical providers, and makes referrals to other appropriate dental practices and specialists. Builds referral pathways with other dental and medical providers.
  • Performs the duties of a team leader in a clinical setting, which includes ensuring effective teamwork and efficient flow of clients.
  • Works with oral health team to provide clients with access to social/health/community resources, and collaborates with the partner agencies as appropriate.
  • Respects and values the diversity of clients and the target communities, preserves confidentiality and seeks to minimize risk.

Position Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of the eligibility requirements for publicly funded dental programs. Demonstrated understanding of the diverse and complex health and social needs of the community members, particularly those experiencing social inequity and discrimination. Ability to communicate (oral and written) proficiently in both English & Arabic languages an asset. Previous experience working with children and/or senior population an asset. Familiarity with government legislation, such as occupational health and safety, and privacy legislation. Available to work in various locations and under flexible hours.

Education, Training, and Experience:

  • Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree from a university recognized by the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario and eligible to practice clinical dentistry in Ontario.
  • Current member in good standing with the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario
  • Experience working in a dental office, community health facility and/or public health setting

Other Requirements:

  • Immunizations and TB screening as per WECHU policies.
  • Current BLS (CPR Level HCP) certification as a minimum.
  • Provide and maintain current vulnerable sector police clearance.
  • Ability to work weekend and evenings as required by the program.
  • A valid Ontario driver’s licence, access to a reliable motor vehicle during working hours and 2million dollars in liability insurance.
  • Must obtain and maintain in good standing professional malpractice liability insurance with a minimum coverage of $2 million per occurrence and $5 million in the aggregate, as well as all other insurance as required by the College.
