Background
Unilever sells and distributes circa 650k tons throughout Southern Africa. The transport manager is responsible for the strategy and operations of moving all finished good via multiple channels from Sourcing units to +-2000 delivery points.
Main purpose of job:
The Transport manager is responsible for managing the movement of all finished goods from Sourcing Units to the eventual customer delivery points across Southern Africa. The role is responsible for the transport planning control tower, managing the day-to-day operations of the transport team, the relationships with 3PL logistics providers and the overall cost budget for transportation.
The Transport Manager is responsible for driving cost saving initiatives, service and on-time delivery improvement, the safety and security agenda across the transport function. The role requires interaction across all stakeholders in the transport process, including Warehouse, Planning Control Tower, Transporters, order management and Customer Experience functions.
The role is also responsible for the operations of the factory transit bays and transshipment network (TSPs) across South Africa.
Key accountabilities:
Continuous improvement:
Implement transport strategy, processes, and innovations with customers and partner to win with carriers.
- Working with Transport Control Tower to drive efficiency improvements through the transport co-ordination function
- Through Transport Coordination function drive continuous improvement to refine transport opportunities across internal and external stakeholders, and support overall deliver function project agendas
- Manage Team looking after credit notes and claims within transport and lead reduction plans in these areas.
Customer Service:
Understand transport related CCFOT (Customer Case Fill On Time) losses and lead and drive the loss reduction plan.
- Drive customer service opportunities with key suppliers in collaboration with UL customers.
- Develop, agree &Implement processes with the customers and carriers/providers that will ensure Customer Service.
- Remain on top of market trends and innovations in the transport industry and drive implementation where relevant
Cost:
Work with Logistics Cost Controller to understand expenditure and find innovative solutions that will reduce cost.
- Develop transport suppliers to be potential preferred suppliers.
- Drive new initiatives that will increase load fill and reduce transport costs
- Identify and implement EOTT opportunities jointly with the CX Teams
- Work closely with Procurement on contract negotiations to optimise transport cost
