PART-TIME COMMUNICATIONS OPERATOR POOL
12-HOUR SHIFTS | DAYS & NIGHTS | WEEKENDS | HOLIDAYS | CALL-INS
The Hamilton Police Service is looking for highly motivated individuals who can meet the demands of our community, our officers, and fellow Communications Operators. Communications Operators work in a high stress, interactive team setting, performing the dual roles of Call Taker and Dispatcher.
In order to support a 24-hours a day 365 days *a year emergency services operation, Communications Operators are scheduled on a part-time basis on *days, nights, weekends, and holidays, *including 12-hour shifts*, and temporary full-time assignments to provide relief for permanent staff (leaves of absences, vacations, etc.).

Hours of Work:
12-hour shifts - days, nights, weekends and holidays, various start times. No guarantee of hours.
Salary Range:
Starting at $34.47 (2021 training rate),* plus 18%* in lieu of benefits and vacation pay.

The Communications Operator is a dual role comprised of call-taking and dispatching emergency calls for service. Success in this position requires well developed stress management, excellent judgment, and teamwork skills. You must be able to deal effectively with people in stressful (sometimes life-threatening) situations in a fast-paced emergency response environment with constant interruptions and background noise.
- Responding to and assessing emergency and non-emergency calls for police, fire, and ambulance from individuals experiencing varying degrees of trauma
- Gathering information quickly and accurately using our computer aided dispatch (CAD) system
- Directing a police response to calls for service and communicating information with precision in a calm, clear, and strong voice
- Continuously monitor police locations, anticipating resources required, and taking prompt action, in accordance with policy.
REQUIREMENTS & TRAINING:
EDUCATION: Minimum Grade 12 Diploma, or the equivalent. Post-Secondary education is an asset.
EXPERIENCE:Minimum one (1) year of previous customer service experience in a fast-paced, multi-tasking computerized work environment
REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to type 50 words per minute:
Clear English verbal/written communication and comprehension skills
- Calm and even tempered disposition
Ability to work effectively under pressure:
Decisiveness and willingness to take initiative
- Excellent multi-tasking, organizational, and computer skills
- Ability to take direction/correction, especially during training period
- Good knowledge/familiarity with the City of Hamilton and vicinity, including major landmarks, streets, and highways
- Ability to maintain emotional detachment, to be satisfied with not always knowing the immediate result or conclusions of a call received or dispatched, and separate home life from work life
