Primary Focus:
Function as the primary liaison between Japanese-speaking player and media, team staff, and other internal and external personnel on matters related to the player’s team duties. The interpreter will be present at all scheduled team games and functions.
_ Responsibilities and Duties:_
- Provide direct translation services between Japanese-speaking player and the media during all scheduled media availabilities, as well as assisting in translation between Japanese-speaking players and other team personnel.
- Work together with the team’s communications department to assist in the coordination and organization of media requests with Japenese-speaking player.
- Assist player with questions regarding the logistics of their employment as a Major League Baseball Player as needed (including transportation, lodging, etc.). This may include providing translation services for player’s family for travel and other logistics related to player’s duties with the team.
- Accompany the team to all games, workouts, team functions, and media engagements, including but not limited to Spring Training in Dunedin, FL, all home games in Toronto, ON, and all team road games.
- As permitted by media schedule and other translation obligations, provide general support for Major League coaching staff during pre-game workouts as needed (eg. shagging fly balls, setting up practice technology).
- Assist with translation between player and team staff during pre-game, in-game, and post-game periods.
- Assist in the production of team marketing, broadcast, media publications, and social-media content. Collaborate with community relations and Jays Care to coordinate player involvement in related initiatives.
_ Experience and Job Requirements_
- Bilingual fluency in written and oral English and Japanese; demonstrated proficiency in efficient oral translations.
- Baseball experience, with familiarity with all baseball-relevant vernacular in both English and Japanese.
- Professional experience in media and public relations communications in both English and Japanese in a professional sports environment is a plus. Prior experience as an interpreter in live media settings is a plus.
- Strong interpersonal skills to communicate effectively and professionally with a wide range of individuals in both verbal and written formats.
- Professional disposition and ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters with discretion.
- Effective time-management and organizational skills.
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and long hours.
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally as dictated by the team’s travel schedule.
