Overall Accountability
The Early Learning and Childcare Worker provides developmentally appropriate play-based literacy to English Language Learning (ELL) preschool children. English language acquisition will be developed through culturally responsive collaborative practice.
Specific Accountabilities
- Develops and delivers an early childhood program to support language and literacy development
- Collaborates with the Principal, Preschool teacher and Instructional Services on the delivery of a parent support and education program to support the literacy and language developed for the children at home
- Participates in the assessment process of language proficiency in English skills
- Collects and compiles documentation and data related to the progress of the children
- Engages interpreters to facilitate communication with families
Qualifications:
- Two (2) year diploma from a recognized institution in Early Learning & Childcare including course work in child development, learning through play, diversity in childcare settings and other related areas of study or equivalent
- Experience working with ‘new Canadian’ children and families from diverse backgrounds in a learning environment
- Child Development Supervisor Certificate (formerly level 3) or be eligible to attain this certification
- Broad based understanding of the challenges of immigration and cultural transition
- Respect for and understanding of the importance of the value of first language and culture
- Second language skills an asset
