Job Summary
As an IMS DB2 Mainframe System Programmer, you will make an impact by supporting and enhancing our z/OS mainframe environment. You’ll manage IMS v15 system software, performing upgrades, troubleshooting, and ensuring optimal performance and reliability of IMS subsystems and related tools. You will be a valued member of our Cloud and Infrastructure Security team and work collaboratively with our Infra Ops Specialist.
In this role, you will:
- Execute scheduled system administration tasks such as startup, shutdown, and backups.
- Diagnose and resolve issues related to IMS system software and associated utilities.
- Define and implement policies for disk storage, CPU resource limits, and backup strategies.
- Administer IMS systems, including data recovery and corruption resolution.
- Conduct R&D and proof-of-concept testing for new IMS features and report findings to senior management.
- Perform IMSGEN and SYSGEN activities.
- Manage IMS utilities (Backup, Reorg, Recovery, Load, Unload, Pointer Checker).
- Create and manage databases, tablespaces, tables, indexes, and related objects.
- Monitor and tune SQL performance; resolve deadlocks and timeouts.
- Handle security, space, and incident/change/problem management.
- Support DBA housekeeping and job monitoring.
Work model

Based on this role’s business requirements, this is a hybrid position requiring 3 days a week in a client or Cognizant office in Hartford, CT. What you need to have to be considered:
- Strong experience with IMS v15, z/OS, SMPE, IMSGEN, and SYSGEN.
- Solid understanding of RDBMS concepts and SQL performance tuning.
- Proven experience in IMS software upgrades and full system-level backup/recovery.
- Familiarity with IBM IMS utilities and basic IMS/DB2 commands.
- Experience in security and space management within mainframe environments.
