Description
This position is involved in the maintenance of properties and facilities managed as open space areas and other Town properties administered by the Conservation Department, marsh restoration projects and Shellfish Commission programs. This position is under the immediate supervision of the Conservation Crew Leader and/or the Conservation Manager.

- Inspects properties and equipment and takes immediate action when appropriate; reports observations and performs required maintenance and repair
- Performs installation, maintenance and repairs to water control structures such as fish ladders, ditches, tide gates, dikes and drainage culverts
- Performs installation, maintenance and repair of fences, gates, trails, culverts, foot bridges, signs and kiosks, storage sheds and buildings
- Performs plant nursery maintenance, installation of nursery stock, soil preparation and seeding
- Assist in skilled duties such as field welds on cathode protection systems with Caldwelds or oxy-acetylene torch
- Performs period maintenance and minor repairs to equipment, vehicles, and boats
- Assists in the supervision and training of seasonal crew members
- Performs snow or storm-related emergency duties as required
- Participation in all mandatory, Town-sponsored lifesaving and safety training programs
- Overtime (including weekends) may be required for storm related or general emergencies, or at the discretion of the Conservation Manager to coordinate and assist volunteer and civic group activities
- Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Working knowledge of construction methods and materials and landscaping practices
- Knowledge of field conditions and impact on or by operation of construction equipment
- Familiar with plant identification and horticultural practices
- Ability to read and interpret maps, specifications, blueprints and sketches
- Skill in performing technical duties
- Ability to follow oral and written directions with a minimum of direct supervision
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Some proficiency in general construction techniques, basic carpentry and woodworking skills, tools and equipment
- Sufficient physical strength and stamina to work long hours under adverse weather conditions in difficult terrain, when necessary
- Ability to swim
- Demonstrated ability to work and communicate in a professional and efficient manner
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and superiors
- Ability to maintain physical strength and stamina for sustained periods, with or without the assistance of a fellow crew member, to complete required tasks (for example, lifting bags of concrete, lifting zinc ingot anodes weighing up to 110 pounds)
- Adequate physical agility and visual and auditory acuity to perform assigned duties
- Ability to labor for extended periods of time in adverse or extreme weather conditions; exposure to insects including bee and wasp stings, poisonous vegetation including poison ivy, oak or sumac; common exposure to paints, thinners, fiberglass resins, acetone, wood preservatives, detergents, pesticides, herbicides, fuels and lubricants
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Possess and maintain a current Class 2 State of Connecticut Commercial Driver’s License
- Possess and maintain a Connecticut Pesticides Applicator License
- Possess and maintain a Certificate of Personal Watercraft Operation
- The ability to obtain any other required permits and licenses
- Experience with operation and maintenance of self-regulating tide gates preferred
