Role Summary

The Truck / Vehicle Mechanic Assistant is responsible for supporting the senior mechanics in the daily maintenance, repair, and servicing of the company’s fleet, including heavy-duty trucks, delivery vehicles, and light commercial vehicles. This role ensures that all mechanical work is carried out efficiently, safely, and strictly adheres to established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Key Responsibilities

  1. Maintenance & Repair Assistance
  2. Assist lead mechanics with routine preventative maintenance, including oil changes, fluid level checks, filter replacements, and chassis lubrication.
  3. Help diagnose mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic faults on diesel trucks and petrol vehicles.
  4. Assist in the removal, replacement, and testing of vehicle components (e.g., brakes, spark plugs, alternators, and actuators).
  5. Perform basic tyre inspections, rotations, and pressure checks.

2. Workshop & Tool Management

  • Prepare the necessary tools, diagnostic equipment, and parts for the mechanic prior to starting a job.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe working environment in the workshop, ensuring all spills are cleaned immediately to comply with OHS standards.
  • Clean and correctly store tools and equipment after use.

3. Administration & Compliance

  • Assist in accurately completing daily job cards and maintenance logs for every vehicle serviced.
  • Submit requisition forms for replacement parts, lubricants, and workshop consumables to ensure stock levels are maintained without disrupting workflow.
  • Strictly adhere to workshop health and safety protocols, including the correct use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Minimum Requirements

  • Education: Grade 12 / Matric. (An N1-N3 certificate in Motor Trade Theory or Diesel Mechanics is highly advantageous).
  • Experience: Minimum of 1-2 years of experience working as an assistant in an automotive workshop, fleet maintenance, or manufacturing plant environment.
  • Knowledge: Basic understanding of mechanical and electrical systems in trucks and light vehicles. Familiarity with workshop tools and heavy-lifting equipment.
  • Licenses: A valid Code 10 or Code 14 (EC) driver’s license is preferred for moving vehicles around the yard.
  • Attributes: Physically fit (capable of heavy lifting), strong attention to detail, and the ability to follow strict instructions and safety SOPs.

Working Conditions
- Exposure to workshop noise, grease, oil, and automotive chemicals.

Requires standing for long periods, bending, and working underneath vehicles
