Responsibilities include:
- Manage all aspects of crop husbandry for a variety of vegetable crops and research trials
- Oversee administration and budgeting of the farm unit
- Organize and hire seasonal labour, manage farmworkers, and effectively co-ordinate and allocate all farm resources according to the needs of a diverse team of plant breeders and production officers
- Liaise with researchers on a regular basis and give updates on trials
- Responsibility for maintaining all farm machinery, equipment and vehicles
- Manage fertilizer & irrigation requirements for research and production both in the nurseries and the field
Minimum requirements:
- Agricultural Diploma / similar tertiary qualification
- Skilled in vegetable farming practices, more specifically, management of outdoor and protected vegetable cultivation
- Thorough mechanical knowledge and understanding of modern agricultural practices and horticultural techniques
- Sound knowledge of crop chemical usage, budgeting and maintenance of mechanical and irrigation equipment.
- Strong communication, organisation and interpersonal skills
- Proficiency in both English and Afrikaans
- Computer literacy (word and excel) essential
- A valid driver’s license
