Expeditors International of Washington, Inc. is seeking an experienced attorney specializing in international employment and labor law. The position can be located at any Expeditors branch office in Europe or the Middle East, but a location in one of our offices in India is preferred.

Job Description:
The Assistant Corporate Counsel will join a world-class legal department, devote 80% of time to providing advice and strategies on labor and employment matters in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and India, and devote 20% of time to assisting with global regulatory and compliance matters.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Supporting and advising business teams, including executives, managers, employee relations, information services, and operations regarding compliance with existing and forthcoming labor and employment laws and regulations
  • Advising on issues such as discipline, non-competition, redundancies, leave, disability, contingent workers, equity, contractor management, occupational health and safety, antidiscrimination, wage and hour, and union/labor relations
  • Managing litigation, outside counsel, and budgets
  • Providing representation and/or management of matters before human rights tribunals and agencies
  • Conducting and managing internal investigations
  • Responding to governmental subpoenas, investigations, and audits
  • Drafting and revising employment policies, standards, and internal work regulations
  • Drafting service provider, commission, non-compete, employment, and settlement agreements
  • Developing and delivering client training on compliance with labor and employment laws
  • Leading responses to governmental inquiries into employment/labor related matters
  • Performing project management work for legal projects
  • Formulating efficient resolution strategies to meet business objectives
  • Providing effective cross-functional support inside and outside of the legal department
  • Assisting in developing and implementing departmental goals and initiatives

Travel: Expected 5% to 15%; Valid passport/authorized to travel internationally

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctorate, Bachelor of Laws, or equivalent degree in Laws
    3-5 years of experience in a top law firm preferred
  • In-house experience working in the law department of a Fortune 500 company highly desirable, but not required
  • Strong knowledge of, and practical experience advising on labor and employment laws and regulations
  • Working knowledge of U.S. labor and employment laws and regulations preferred, working knowledge of international labor laws and regulations desired
  • Practical experience working with trade unions preferred
  • Experience in logistics, transport and related sectors preferred
  • Strong analytical, interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills with high level of attention to detail and accuracy
  • Excellent business judgment and ability to work independently
  • Fluent oral and written English required. Fluency in additional languages an asset
