Detailed Overview: The Porter transports patients, bodies, and materiel such as supplies, equipment, pharmaceuticals and any other materiel between Hospital areas; completes related record keeping duties. Responsibilities:

  • Transports patients utilizing mechanical aids such as wheelchairs, and/or stretchers; transports bodies from wards to the Morgue; provides after-hours services as required; accepts bodies from external transport services, checks them into the morgue, and releases bodies following established procedures.
  • Assists in transferring patients to and from beds, stretchers and wheelchairs.
  • Ensures patients' needs are attended to while being transported; observes, responds and deals effectively with patients in distress and reports unusual patient conditions to the appropriate authority according to established procedures.
  • Transports blood gases and laboratory samples as required; provides messenger service within the Hospital as required (i.e. charts, x-rays, lab specimens).
  • Transports beds, equipment and material as required.
  • Completes documentation regarding length of time to complete patient transport assignment, delays encountered, etc.; completes routine forms such as dispatch logs according to established procedures.
  • Cleans equipment used in transport such as I.V. poles, suctions, stretchers and wheelchairs; changes linen and reports maintenance requirements for patient transport equipment.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience

Grade 10, plus one year's recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Basic Life Support Level C certificate required.

  • Ability to deal with others effectively.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.
