In the phlebotomist role, you will prepare and sanitize the lab area and all needed supplies, such as needles, tourniquets, gloves, hand sanitizer, specimen containers, alcohol swabs, and specimen labels. You will identify the appropriate vein for venipuncture. You will also be expected to comply with all laboratory safety procedures. Success in this role will be demonstrated by consistently conducting safe and accurate blood collection procedures while making this an easy and pleasant experience for patients.
Phlebotomist Job Responsibilities and Duties
- Practices proper patient identification
- Performs applicable blood collection technique (capillary collection, pediatric and geriatric venipuncture)
- Handles blood samples with sensitivity and confidentiality
- Observes adherence to rules and regulations mandated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
- Properly disposes of contaminated supplies
- Maintains accurate and concise patient and sample documentation
- Processes high-volume blood samples
