Company:
The Belgian Investment Company for Developing Countries - BIO is a development finance institution owned by the Belgian government that seeks to support the private sector in developing countries by investing in local enterprises, either directly or indirectly (e.g. through financial institutions or investment funds).
Function:
You are the manager of the team responsible for legal aspects regarding investments (equity, debt and grants) in any of the developing countries where BIO is active in support of BIO’s development mission and objectives.
You are responsible for the organisation and management of the team: you set and monitor objectives, you oversee the planning and allocation of tasks, you motivate and guide the team members, you ensure adequate team capacity and competences, and you seek to innovate and improve performance.
You make sure the team provides quality legal support in investment projects:
- you provide legal support throughout the lifecycle of an investment as part of the internal deal team. You advise on legal terms and structuring, draft and review legal documentation, participate in negotiations, and coordinate external counsel and co-investors; and
- you actively contribute to the team’s knowledge management through the development of tools, templates and databases as well as the set-up of training programs to strengthen internal legal knowledge.
You coordinate team representation, internally and externally: you are the liaison with other managers and between the team and governance bodies; you ensure team representation towards other teams and with external partners.
You report to the Chief Corporate Officer and act as their backup on specific tasks or topics regarding investments and team management.
Profile:
- You have a Master in Law (obtained at a Belgian University or equivalent).
- You have at least 7 years of relevant experience, preferably in an international environment, with an acquired knowledge and expertise in debt and equity transactions.
- You have an interest in BIO’s mission and in development finance.
- You have excellent networking and communication skills (spoken and written).
- You have strong people management skills; experience in managing a team is an asset.
- You have the ambition to lead, make decisions and share knowledge while maintaining a team spirit.
- You are pragmatic and solution-oriented, while adequately managing legal risks.
- You are able to understand the business needs, issues and priorities underlying the legal work.
- You are intellectually curious and not afraid of complex legal questions.
- You are rigorous, with an eye for detail and high quality work.
- You have very good written and spoken command of French and English. Working knowledge of Dutch or Spanish is an asset.
- You are proactive and autonomous, well organised and able to set priorities, and take responsibility.
