At Ko Taku Reo we work to nurture the social and emotional wellbeing of New Zealand’s Deaf and hard of hearing children and help them form their own identity; as well as providing support and resources to help them reach their academic potential. We are a school and a national learning organisation. You will be joining a nationwide team who share passion and enthusiasm for supporting our students and school.

THE ROLE / TE MAHI

We are looking for caring and positive professionals who are team players to join our Residential Support Team. As a Residential Youth Worker you will be responsible for the safe operation of the residential homes for Deaf students. The Residential Youth Workers works closely and in co-operation with senior leaders, other residential staff, families and whānau to encourage and teach Deaf students to live independently. They are responsible for the care and safety of residential students.

The residence, located in Sumner, Christchurch, incorporates a residential setting for Deaf boarding students during school term time. The residential programme focuses on independent living and life skills. Students range from 11 to 21 years of age. The hours of work are Saturday and Sunday 7.00am-3.30pm or 1.30pm-10.00pm.

ABOUT YOU / MŌ KOE

To be suitable for this position you will have:

  • NZSL experience or qualifications preferred, a willingness to learn is essential
  • Knowledge of Deaf culture preferred, a willingness to learn is essential
  • 2+ years' experience working with youth preferred
  • A current full driver's license
  • Experience in motivating and communicating with a broad range of groups and individuals and in particular, young people
  • Experience working in a school environment preferable but not essential
  • Experience working with young people with multiple needs
  • Knowledge of Children's Act and NZ legislation preferred
