Duties & Responsibilities:
Purpose of Position:
Under direct supervision, performs work in central service involving the decontamination, preparation, packaging, processing, sterilization, storage and distribution of medical devices, equipment, supplies, and instrumentation according to prescribed procedures and techniques. All personnel perform related work.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Cleans, sterilizes and assembles equipment, supplies and instruments according to prescribed procedures and techniques.

  1. Decontaminates the full range of reusable patient care equipment and medical supplies, including but not limited to surgical instruments, containers and equipment such as aspirators, croupettes and oxygen suppliers using detergents and disinfecting solutions.

  2. Sterilizes instruments, equipment, surgical linens and supplies including surgical packs, treatment trays and syringes using steam or gas sterilizers or disinfects with antiseptic solutions.

  3. Operates semi-automatic to automatic sterilizing equipment; operates mechanical decontamination equipment and other related equipment, e.g., ultra-sonic washers, rinsers/dryers.

  4. Prepares packages of supplies and instrument trays, needles, syringes and gloves according to prescribed procedures; wraps, labels and seals.

  5. Prepares list of contents and affixes list to package or groups of packages. Uses central system for supplies being processed.

  6. May gather used supplies for hospital facilities and/or departments and return them after sterilization.

  7. May fill requisitions, record changes and inventory supplies.

  8. Handles exchange carts for stock items and supplies and maintains distribution records.

  9. Reports defective or damaged materials, equipment and supplies to supervisor.

  10. Maintains cleanliness and upkeep of exchange carts and work environment.

  11. Maintains cleanliness of sterilizer and other department equipment as scheduled.

  12. Participates in staff development activities as appropriate and required.

  13. Performs other related duties as assigned or directed by supervisor and/or appropriate personnel.


Minimum Qualifications:
For Appointment to Level I:
1. Documented designation of Grandfathered status as a Central Service Technician.

For Appointment to Level II:

  1. Hold and maintain a Certified Registered Central Service Technician credential issued by the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA); or
  2. Hold and maintain a Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician credential issued by the Certifying Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD).

Note: Effective January 1, 2015, all newly hired incumbents to the title of Central Service Technician must hold and maintain a Certified Registered Central Service Technician credential or a Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician credential and be assigned at Level II. In addition, any employee who functions as a Central Service Technician will be required to annually complete ten (10) hours of continuing education credits in order to remain qualified to perform the functions of a Central Service Technician at an NYC Health + Hospitals facility.
