Choir Director/ Accompanist (Pt)

The Avon-Holbrook Collaborative of St. Michael and St. Joseph Parishes is seeking an accomplished music leader with a love for the Roman Catholic liturgy and sacred music from traditional to contemporary. This part-time position is paid a competitive stipend, with additional stipends for weddings and funerals.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Understand the role that music plays in the Catholic liturgy and in supporting worship and faith formation
  • Play the organ or piano for two Masses each weekend, directing an experienced volunteer choir at one Mass (September - June) and experienced cantors for all other Masses
  • Accompany and direct choir for other liturgies such as First Holy Communion, Holy Days, and Triduum
  • Select music for liturgies in cooperation with other ministers
  • Recruit, develop, train and direct choir members, instrumentalists and cantors
  • Direct weekly choir rehearsal and additional rehearsals as needed for special liturgies
  • Right of first refusal to play for all parish weddings and funerals (additional stipend)
  • Secure substitute accompanists when necessary to cover vacation, illness, or other absence
  • Purchase music and supplies with the pastor’s approval and within budget guidelines
  • Oversee compliance with copyright laws and licensing procedures
  • Recommend maintenance of all instruments and audio equipment, working with the Finance and Operations Manager to schedule
  • Participate in Collaborative and Diocesan meetings

Education and Experience Preferred:
Degree in Music or Liturgy preferred

  • Experience in a parish setting, working with volunteers and as part of a team
  • Proficiency as an organist, pianist and choral director; able to play the organ to a high professional standard and maintain the standard through regular practice and continuing education.
  • Knowledge of the Church’s tradition of sacred music and liturgy including current church documents
  • Commitment to upholding the faith, morals, and practices of the Roman Catholic Church, with a particular emphasis on respect for the dignity of all individuals
