Role Purpose

McDonnell Price Roofing Contractors Ltd is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Trainee Estimator / Surveyor to join our growing team. This role is designed for an individual at the early stages of their construction career who is committed to undertaking a Building Surveying or related degree at university, alongside practical, on-the-job training.

Key Responsibilities

Estimating & Commercial Support

• Assist senior estimators in reviewing and evaluating cost estimates.
• Support the preparation of accurate and timely project estimates.
• Learn how to understand scopes of work and tender documentation.
• Assist with cost analysis and budget breakdowns.

Procurement & Supplier Liaison

• Work with the Buyer to help source materials at best value.
• Assist with issuing detailed purchase orders.
• Support the management of supplier pricing and quotations.
• Establish and maintain positive working relationships with suppliers.

Client & Project Communication

• Communicate with clients and internal team members regarding new and ongoing projects.
• Support senior staff with project-related correspondence and documentation.
• Learn how to manage professional client relationships.

Site & Surveying Exposure

• Attend site visits with senior estimators and surveyors.
• Assist with site surveys and data collection.
• Occasionally attend pre-start meetings alongside senior staff.
• Gain practical understanding of roofing systems, construction methods, and site operations.

Learning & Development

• Work alongside senior estimators and surveyors on day-to-day tasks.
• Demonstrate commitment to professional development and progression within the business.

Person Specification

Essential

• Commitment to undertaking and completing a Building Surveying (or related) university degree.
• Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
• Enthusiastic, motivated, and eager to learn.
• Ability to multitask and meet deadlines.
• Strong problem-solving skills.
• Good written and verbal communication skills.

Desirable

• Interest or prior exposure to construction or roofing.
• Basic understanding of estimating or surveying principles.
• Full UK driving licence (or working towards).
